Bijou meatballsAs sad as we are to see many of our friends leave Sarasota for cooler climates, we're happy to have our town back for a while (less traffic at least)! For us, summer means First Fridays and pouring some of the best "juice" for our guests!

We are officially announcing the return of our First Friday Wine Tastings, from 5 to 7 p.m. the first Friday of each month during the summer, beginning Fri., May 2.

Wine merchants from around the area will be pouring wines and sharing knowledge with you. Passed hors d'oeuvres and an enormous cheese board to complement the wines are all included for just $18.

Grab your friends, enjoy the wine tasting, then join us for dinner! After dinner take a stroll around downtown. Most of the art galleries and shops are open late on First Fridays and there is even free entertainment on some of the street corners! No reservations are needed for the wine tasking, just get here early, it's first come, first served!

Guests will also be able to purchase discounted wines to take home or enjoy in the restaurant as part of the our semi-annual "Bin End Sale". We are clearing out our cellar to make room for new wines, so stock up! Take a bottle or a case, it's the best deal we're going to have all year!

See you May 2! Come hungry, bring your friends and plan to stay all night.

unnamedSpring has finally arrived and I am reminded of this quote:

"That is one good thing about this world...there are always sure to be more springs." - L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Avonlea

The joyous arrival of Spring means Easter is just around the corner. It is a wonderful time to enjoy our many blessings: family, friends, health, our beliefs, and, of course, chocolate bunnies!

We invite you and your family to The Bijou Cafe for our outstanding Easter Dinner where we will be offering our award winning Dinner Menu from 12 noon until 8:00pm Sunday April 20th.
For the Day's Specials, our chefs will be preparing our famous Australian Rack of Lamb with minted demi-glace sauce as well as Maple Glazed Virginia Baked Ham with all the trimmings. The Rack of Lamb has been a Bijou Cafe Specialty for 28 years and an Easter Dinner Favorite!
For the Catch of the Day, we will be featuring the freshest, local and most sustainable fish we can get. Our fish and seafood presentations are the talk of the town. On Easter you can be sure we will be offering the most delectable delights from the sea!

Be sure to save some room for our delightfully delicious and delectable desserts! Click here to see our complete menu.
And don't forget about our pommes to go! If you're serving Easter Dinner at home but still want a touch of the Bijou on your table, how about serving our Pommes Gratin Dauphinoise straight from your own oven? Bring in your oven proof casserole and we will fill it with our famous potatoes and have it ready for you to finish at home!
Be sure to call right away for reservations as this holiday sells out quickly. See you all soon!

vday bijouIf there is one thing we know how to do here at the Bijou, that's Valentine's Day. Our delicious food, paired with a beautiful ambiance and ideal location for a downtown Sarasota stroll after dinner, makes your Valentine's day as simple as calling for a reservation.
We have a special menu planned for February 14th with some of our regular's favorites! And nothing says "I love you" quite like JP's dark chocolate terrine with fresh raspberries and Chambord coulis for dessert, especially when it's paired with a glass of bubbly!
Presently, we are completely booked for Valentine's day, but we will also be serving this special menu Saturday and Sunday as well!
Have a wonderful Valentine's Day with your loved ones and we hope to see you soon.

jp as a boyWith Nelson Mandela’s recent passing, my memories of growing up in South Africa came flooding back. Christmas and the holidays, too, are a nice time to reminisce about childhood.

Since South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, Christmas is a summer holiday. It’s warm and sunny, and not a flake of snow or Jack Frost in sight. It’s quite funny to see store windows decorated with fake snow as if the “real Christmas” is only in the north!

With schools closed for the Christmas holidays, people head for the beaches or go camping. Even if staying at home for the holidays, Christmas dinner is usually an outdoor event. The traditional Braaivleis, or South African barbecue, is often a choice for people out in the country.

Although South Africa is a republic and its citizens are fiercely proud of their culture, there still remain some customs from the British influence many years ago. One of those is the Christmas meal which might be either turkey (or duck), roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, mince pies or suckling pig with yellow rice, raisins and vegetables, followed by Christmas Pudding or a traditional South African dessert called Malva Pudding (sometimes also called Lekker Pudding). Christmas crackers, those funny decorated paper tubes, are pulled, and everyone dons the silly paper hats that come flying out along with little toys and a fortune!

Many of my relatives have left South Africa and are now scattered all over the world. My cousin, Penny, lives in Western Australia and for their Christmas feast she usually does a rosemary and garlic slow roast lamb. She might also do a honey glaze ham or Cornish hens. A popular side dish is her cheesy potato bake consisting of sliced Nadine potatoes and thinly sliced onion, all absolutely drenched in butter and tangy cheddar cheese. Hmmm…sounds like a version of the Bijou's Pommes Gratin!

Another favorite is a roasted pumpkin salad with feta cheese on a bed of mixed greens. Penny makes a divine mushroom, bacon and corn savory rice too. We all know Aussies are mad about shrimp and prawns so they have chili barbecued prawns or shrimps. For dessert they feast on classic strawberry cream Pavlova and Tiramisu ice cream cake. And to drink, vodka fruit punch with watermelon, mint and strawberries, and white wine, usually a late harvest or Riesling. Sounds like a winner to me!

Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season, a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year!

And yes we are open New Year's Eve! Make a reservation with us on OpenTable online or call 941.366.8111

new years_eve_partyWe were very excited about the 100 reservations we had for our first New Year’s Eve dinner after opening the Bijou in 1986...Even though we only had seats for 50 people indoors.

We had an extra 24 seats outside on our awning-covered patio, which were quite comfortable but totally outside. The weather that morning was grim. It was cold and rainy and it appeared it wasn’t going to change soon. Going into the afternoon, it got worse by the minute. The rain started pounding down so hard it was seeping through the canvas awning and blowing in on the sides. The temperature kept dropping and it was beginning to look like we had a problem, Houston!

As on the stage and screen, the show must go on, regardless of challenges. The staff and I stapled plastic sheeting to the sides of the patio while my partner, Freddy Matson, went to a rental place and secured a space heater. It appeared the problem was solved, albeit not very attractively.

When Freddy fired up the heater we realized we were doomed. It ran on kerosene, and although it put out some serious heat, it stunk like the south end of a north bound jet. There was no way we were going to seat people out here and expect them to pay top dollar for a gala New Year’s Eve dinner!

Panic set in followed by wishful praying. I buried myself in my kitchen getting ready for the evening and trying to block out the impending disaster. Freddy, who was the maitre d', had nowhere to go except straight to panicsville! We were scheduled to open at 6pm. At 5:30, the rain suddenly stopped. The clouds gradually cleared and the temperature started rising as the front came through. We all directed a quick but sincere "thank you" towards the heavens and rushed around pulling the plastic sheets off. The kerosene heat blaster was banished to the trunk of Freddy’s car and the first guests were seated completely unaware of the terrifying moments preceding their entrance. A lesson was learned!

Two weeks later we applied for a loan to get that patio enclosed. It never happened again. Come see us this year to ring in the New Year. We have an excellent menu in the works, and our tables are filling up again! Multiple courses, bubbly for everyone when the clock strikes 12 and our elegant staff taking excellent care of you! To make a reservation, call 941.366.8111 or visit the Bijou Cafe on Open Table.

Sadly, the tradition of Thanksgiving has become a day to consume massive amounts of food, watch football on TV, and go shopping for Black Friday deals. This year some big name stores are open all day so you can part with your hard earned cash even sooner!

Thanksgiving Day began as a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Several other places around the world observe similar celebrations.

As tradition dictates, many families still come together to observe the feast, yet how many deep in their hearts really give thanks? We could be thinking of the gifts we are given each and every day. Waking up and knowing we are free to do whatever we choose with this day is the ultimate gift.

We are blessed to live in a country without war on our shores. We have freedom of speech and freedom of religion and we have the right to say what we want, and believe what we feel is right. While we have so much to be thankful for there are many in the world that are not so fortunate.

This quote from an unknown source is quite inspirational:

“If you have food in your fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head, and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75 percent of the world.

"If you have money in the bank, your wallet, and some spare change, you are among the top eight percent of the world's wealthy.

"If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the one million people who will not survive this week.

"If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the agony of imprisonment or torture, or the horrible pangs of starvation, you are luckier than the 500 million people who are suffering.

"If you can read this message you are more fortunate than over 2 billion people in the world who cannot read at all.”

— Author unknown

So let us put our differences aside for now and give thanks for every blessing we have.

Happy Thanksgiving!

— JP
